We have the BEST pen pals! Once again, a pen pal who lives in New Orleans threw us a Mardi Gras party.
She sent masks and beads. Actually, she sent TONS of beads. She also sent Mardi Gras plates, napkins, and cups. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAND a King Cake!
Since I don't know anything about Mardi Gras, she sent a children's book about the history of MG and what everything represents. It was in rhyme pattern, so we used it for our Shared Reading for the day. I had them take notes while I was reading, preparing them for a Quick Write of what they had learned. Wow! Every kid was writing prolifically. For functional text, they each wrote invitations to teachers. For poetry, they made their invitations in rhyme patterns. The whole day was very educational, and oh so fun!
My students invited another 4th grade class to our room to teach them about Mardi Gras. After my kids explained all that they had learned for about 10 minutes, they stopped and asked if they had any questions. First girl who raised her hand, "Who is Marty Graw?" :)
Our preschool class was celebrating as well. Their teacher even had them make these special donut things that were totally sinful but YUMMY! They walked around school, distributing their donut things (they have a name, but I forgot what it was). When they saw our room, they wanted to get dressed up in our MG decorations.
They are the cutest EVER!!!!
Once again, our pen pals have spoiled us. Oh, and see that flag in the back of this picture?
That came from ANOTHER pen pal who lives in Washington, D.C. and works with a senator. That flag. That flag that is now in Whiteriver, AZ flew over our nation's capitol. How cool is that?! We have the best pen pals. Thank you guys!
